And The Trolls Said: “Kill HER!!”

To celebrate the opening of Slightly Relevant, Hereticaneue posted her blog and generated quite a bit of “trolism“. Here’s an excerpt of her blog:

Hate is a strong word, I know, but since I am a woman and thus weak in virtually every way, I have to assert my strength where ever I can. Don’t you agree? Well, you should, and if you don’t, then you’re just a sexist, bigoted, arrogant, inconsiderate, intolerant, misogynistic dirtbag, now aren’t you? Grrr, men! Good, now that we’ve cleared that up, I’m going to tell you what’s on my mind.

Lately, I’ve noticed a trend within the video game blogging — excuse me, the video game journalism(ahem) — community. It seems that all anyone wants to talk about is the supposed blatant sexism in video games (as well as movies and music) these days. There’s a feminist uprising among gamers that is calling for more equal treatment of female characters in video games. There are people being offended by the use of the word “rape” in a Penny Arcade comic. There are people offended by Eminem and Rihanna’s song “praising” domestic violence. People decry the unfair treatment of women in the gaming world, yet every week there is a new blog somewhere written about — or written by — “gurl gamerz”, thus perpetuating the stereotypes and the problems.

et me be clear. I am not denouncing women’s rights/issues activism. What I have a problem with is when people take things to extremes, and when people are so caught up in their own ideas that they forget to consider other people’s perspectives, yet expect (demand) that others show them special consideration. This problem is by no means confined to the topic of sexism/feminism in video game culture, but that is the area I’m focusing on.

Struck a nerve yet? Too mad? If you are one of those crazy people that get upset easily do something real quick: let her know!
