What Thom Yorke Bumps In The Whip
Thom Yorke is a talented musician. He fronts a pretty popular band. They’re called Radiohead. They’re from the UK, and they’re rather good. Mr. Yorke and his bandmates have spent the better part of the last two decades crafting gorgeous compositions that have earned them worldwide critical acclaim, the adulation of millions, and, one can reasonably assume, large sums of money. However, one has to wonder, when Thom and the boys are not making music, what are they doing? Much in the same vein as the question of what a world-class chef eats when he’s not cooking for others, one has to wonder what Thom bumps in the whip on his way to a session. As it turns out, on Dead Air Space, he’s indulged us without us even asking. Like Always.
Here’s a listing of select tracks from the last few posts. Pretty hip hop-centric. I can’t help that Thom loves Stone’s Throw so much. Head over to DAS for the complete lists. I’ll offer up another sampling of tracks in the coming days.
Quasimoto – Goodmorning Sunshine
Quasimoto is one of Madlib’s many aliases. This particular long-snouted creature raps in a high pitch over some of Madlib’s finest offerings. The ramblings are typical Madlib (stoner-friendly, ambiguous interstellar musings) but the beat bangs.
Quasimoto – Goodmorning Sunshine
Black Lips – Veni Vidi Vici (Diplo Remix)
The punks from Athens get the Diplo treatment, which in this case involves an extended cut with a more rhythmic interlude. I’m a fan of both versions of this song, but I subscribe to the idea that anything Diplo touches turns to gold.
Black Lips – Veni Vidi Vici (Diplo Remix)
Jay Electronica – Exhibit C
Jay’s dearth of available material seems to generate, if nothing else, more buzz for an actual release. If you missed his 9+ minute Jon Brion/Eternal Sunshine interpretation (The Pledge), grab a late pass and then check this one out. Jay brings the heat and a few extra clips. Also, it’s produced by Just Blaze, and he pieces together certified bangers like no one this side of Pete Rock circa early 1990′s.
Aloe Blacc – Take Me Back
This is Aloe Blacc’s B-Side to the very popular “I Need A Dollar”, on steady rotation if you caught “How To Make It In America”. If you’re any of the guys at Stone’s Throw, knowing that Radiohead, HBO and Adult Swim are all riding you hard must be pretty gratifying.
Mazzy Star – Into Dust
Sure, it’s cool and all, but I like “Halah” a lot. So there.
