Oscar Predictions (Soon to be winners)
The awards are handed out tonight and here are my picks:
Best Animated Feature
While I have no doubts Up will win this award, I’m hoping some how Fantastic Mr. Fox will come from behind and steal it. Both were great, but not nearly enough people watched Mr. Fox and got a chance to appreciate how great Wes Anderson and his movies are.
Best Foreign Language Film
I’ve honestly only seen one of the films nominated, The White Ribbon, but the trailer and hype I’ve heard around The Prophet makes me think its got potential to win this.
Best Original / Adapted Screenplay
I wouldn’t be surprised to see any of these movies nominated for original screenplay win, but my vote goes to the Coen Brothers for A Serious Man. As for adapted screenplay, another great selection of movies, I’d have to pick Up in the Air.
Best Supporting Actress / Actor
These are probably the easiest two categories. For the men, Christoph Waltz steals the show in Inglorious Basterds as the “Jew Hunter”. There were some solid performances by the other nominees, but he was simply magnificent and there has to be little doubt he will win this. The same goes for Mo’Nique in Precious. She is amazing as the abusive mother (scary too) and like Waltz, she steals the show.
Best Actor / Actress
There’s lots of talk about Sandra Bullock in The Blind Side. I thought she was really good and looking at her competition I’d say she has a pretty good shot. Jeff Bridges has my pick as Bad Blake in Crazy Heart. He was great and the award is a bit overdue. To be fair to the other nominees, there’s a lot of solid competition and I wouldn’t really be surprised if someone else won.
Best Director
Stiff competition here: Five great movies with five deserving directors. Even so, Kathryn Bigelow should have this for The Hurt Locker. Cameron did an amazing job with Avatar and Tarantino is at his best with Inglorious Basterds but Bigelow made an amazing, tense, and overall great movie that should win her the award.
Best Picture
Ten nominees this year, but it doesn’t really change much. This is really just a race between Avatar and The Hurt Locker, and in my opinion isn’t much of a race at all. Avatar looked great, made a ton of cash, and gave movie studios a reason to make every possible movie 3-D, but it wasn’t that good of a movie. It was entertaining and flashy and all, but it isn’t close to Up in the Air, Inglorious Basterds, A Serious man, or Precious and The Hurt Locker trumps all of those. As I said above and in a previous post, it was just an exceptional movie and is a must-see.
Other Categories: The Cove and Food, Inc. were two amazing documentaries and you need to check them out when you get a chance. I’d give Food, Inc. the edge to win. “The Weary Kind” from Crazy Heart is a great song and my pick for Best Original Song, but its up against a couple Disney songs so I’m not holding a lot of hope.
