An Ode to Canada, What if There Was a Video Gaming Olympics? Gobbledigook
Good afternoon, please excuse me if the entirety of the writing in the following blog may seem a little off, for I am still feeling the effects of a long night of celebrating Canada’s glorious victory over the United States. Not only did we come out victorious in the final hockey match, we also stomped the Americans on the podium. With 14 gold (the only medal that matters) we set a new record for the highest number of golds at a winter Olympics. Sure you guys may have had more total medals than us, but this is the way I like to think of it. Two friends argue about who had gotten the most action out of the two of them. Friend A has been with a greater total amount of women than friend B, but friend B has been with a greater amount of 10/10 women. Sure friend A has been with a couple of 10/10 women, but he has also been with quite a few 5/10 women, and an even greater amount of absolutely disgusting 1/10 women. Which friend would you rather be?
I was born and raised in Canada, and after traveling to a number of different places around the world (most of the US, Autralia / New Zealand, England, Germany to name a few) there is no other place I would rather live. If I was single I would probably move to Sweden, but thats a whole different story. I don’t know, this medal win just has me on such a patriotism high, all I’ve been talk about for the last 12 hours is how awesome Canada is. I mean besides Germany we pretty much have the best beer in the world, we dominate the greatest sport in existence, and we live in what is one of the most beautiful countries in the world.
But I digress, this is Gameriot and therefore I am obliged to somehow attach the world of video gaming to this blog. I have always wondered what an international video gaming competition would be like. As a sport, and yes I consider most competitive video games to be a sport, video games have the advantage of being completely international. While The United States and Asia may make up the majority of video game consumers, video games are extremely prevalent in almost every civilized corner of the earth. And if blogs like Eurospective and World of Ming have certainly shown us, there is definitely an audience for international (in this case Europe vs. North America) video game competition.
So what if there were a video gaming Olympics? I think Canada would pretty much be a non-factor. While we are the greatest country in the world, we’re not exactly known for our video gaming. The video game Olympics would be dominated by teams from the U.S., Asia, and Europe. Asia would win Starcraft, and Europe would win pretty much ever other competition. The US might stand a chance if Warcraft were included, but in its current state I don’t think i would include it in a video gaming Olympics.
If it hasn’t yet become massively obvious to you, I’m not exactly swimming in things to write over here. So I figured as filler, I would just write about a couple of things I have on my mind.
The Ricky Gervais Show
My first experiences with Ricky Gervais were through the Office UK. I had fallen in love with the American version of the show, and was told one day by a friend that the American show was inspired by a UK show written by a man called Ricky Gervais. I then went on to watch all of the Office UK, Extras, and the majority of his stand up work and he has since become my favorite comedian. I recently stumbled upon his podcast (how one can not be aware of the most downloaded podcast in the world is beyond me) but I have taken to listening to it quite avadly and it is some of his best work yet. The podcasts follow a pretty standard formula, each one featuring Steven Merchant, Ricky Gervais, and their mutual friend Karl Pilkington. Karl Pilkington is an absolute idiot and says some of the most idiotic things I have ever heard, allowing the bright minds that are Steven Merchant and Ricky Gervais to play off of his stupidity. There is not one unfunny second in each of these podacasts, so you can imagine my glee once I heard that HBO was turning them into a cartoon. You can see a little snippet of that show here:
