She’s Out of My League and The Messenger

Under any other circumstance I probably wouldn’t have watched She’s Out of My League. However, a friend of mine got passes to an early screening and you really can’t turn down free stuff. If you haven’t seen the red band trailer here on Kalibre, check it out below.

The story is simple enough: a hot girl goes out with a loser and everyone, including the loser, wonders why. I actually enjoyed this movie, which was a surprise. It had a lot of laughs and the characters were all very likable and believable. Acting wise, there are a lot of unknowns and small part actors, but this doesn’t hurt the movie. Genre-wise, this probably falls somewhere between a comedy and a chick flick, but I wouldn’t really call it a romantic comedy. I’d say this can definitely be enjoyed by all, especially if you like the trailer.

On a more serious-movie note, and a Oscar nominated one at that, I watched The Messenger starring Ben Foster (awesome in 3:10 to Yuma) and Woody Harrelson (umm, The Messenger).

Foster plays a soldier returning home from combat in Iraq after being wounded and must finish his tour with Harrelson, notifying the families when a soldier has died. It’s a very interesting look at a part of the military I hadn’t really seen before in movies. Obviously, letting families know their spouses/children/parents have died isn’t easy and the reactions are difficult to watch at times. The acting is excellent and the story is very compelling. Though unlikely its playing in many areas, check it out if it is.
