Kalibre At The Movies

Welcome to Kalibre at the Movies. I’m gonna be going over what’s out in theatres now, what’s coming soon, and what I think about it all in this section of the site.  This being my first post I’m going to be going through a lot of the current movies out, so it may be a bit long. Starting with the mega-gigantic-incredible Avatar epic.If you haven’t seen it yet (and you have) it’s certainly worth a watch, and in 3-D if you have the extra cash. It’s prolly not as good as the 17 trillion dollars it’s made so far, but it’s still a cool experience and an entertaining movie to say the least.

A couple movies up for awards this year, Precious and Up in the Air, are both solid. Excellent performances in the both, though Precious is a bit depressing. George Clooney and the hot chick from The Departed make up for a really interesting and funny movie in Up in the Air.

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus was a great fantasy movie, really creative, and great acting from Christopher Plummer and Tom Waits. Heath Ledger and his replacements (he died during the making of the film if you are unaware) were solid and it’s interesting to see how they incorporated that predicament into the movie.

It’s Complicated was pretty lame and I’m giving it the chick-flick-benefit-of-the-doubt. Chick flicks can be good, or at least watchable, but I think this is more of an old-chick flick. It had its moments, but I don’t really want to see old people having sex (if you like watching old people having sex, that fine, it’s just not for me). Peter Jacksons The Lovely Bones was well made, but it certainly left a lot to be desired at the end. It wasn’t bad by any means, but I probably wouldn’t recommend it to anyone who didn’t already have an interest in watching it. I haven’t see Legion, but I can tell you without a doubt that it looks dumb as f…., well you know.

Book of Eli looks like it might have some potential, mainly because of Gary Oldman, but I haven’t seen that one either. Oh, and if you still have The Blind Side playing near you, I would definitely recommend checking it out. You can never go wrong with an inspirational football movie! (Rudy anyone?!)

New this week: When in Rome and Edge of Darkness (aka Payback 2). When in Rome looks like a crappy chick flick and Payback 2 looks like a classic Mel Gibson action/revenge movie (that means it might be good, but probably not).  So… save your money for next week unless you have a theatre near you playing the smaller films mentioned above. Or watch Alvin and the Chipmunks for the third time, its up to you.
