Game fatigue and Machinima!

Lately I have been wondering where to invest my spare time; my love for MMOs and online games is still strong, but I might be suffering from “mmo fatigue”.  As my friends wait impatiently for the release of Aion and after various conversations of how the game will bring real “pvp” to the MMO scene a lá Dark Age of Camelot; my interest for the game keeps diminishing.  Don’t get me wrong, the game is beautiful and the gameplay is solid (I am sure many people will enjoy Aion for the gameplay or novelty), but its becoming less appealing and I will be honest and say I have no idea why.

During the last two months I have been looking for the next new (or already established) MMO to play.  Last game I tried was Taikodom (a game like Eve Online from a Brazilian company, it is F2P right now; click here for more info) and I had the same feeling as when I played Aion …. there was no motivation or desire to play the game. Granted, I had several technical problems and I should re-visit it for a more fair point of view but the question still lingers in my mind: Could it be that I am getting old or is it just “gaming fatigue”? Seeking answers and trying to alleviate the strees, I started to watch Machinima.

For years I have enjoyed Machinima; people with financial limitations (for those that film school is not an option) and great imagination can create masterpieces.  There is a movie that I believe many will enjoy.  Perfect Insanity is an Age of Conan pvp movie ( or maybe cinematographic PvP) that is very entertaining to watch. It features the beautiful graphics that AoC can offer and the unique (one of the things I loved about the game) combat mechanics in any MMO.   Along the editing, and the music you can enjoy another uniqueness of the game: Fatalities.  If by any chance you hate AoC just skip to 3:13 (I highly recommend seeing the whole vid), to get a taste of what the whole movie is about.

Watching that video made me feel nostalgic; I enjoyed the game but at the time of release it was hardly playable.  It also reminds me of Anarchy Online (awesome game for its time) another Funcom game that had a horrible launch.  The game seems to have changed for the good but it could be a little too late.  For example: finding new players on the starting zones proves to be difficult sometimes and there was a server merge (a good thing in my opinion) to help server population.  For those interested in AoC the game offers a very unforgiving pvp environment (no player open loot for those Darkfall lovers out there) and ganking can sometimes be the every day bread. There is an expansion coming out called Rise of the Godslayer that looks pretty good.  The information offered about the new changes coming in for AoC are very interesting as well.  Will I return to AoC?  I don’t know yet ….. but seems tempting.
