Sandbox vs Themepark gameplay

Take action; this type of behavior (just like real life) is fomented and encouraged in Eve; people have to live with the choices made (EvE online offers no selection of servers, everybody plays in the same universe) and retaliation, if desired, is possible. Most mainstream MMOs scold users by limiting choices like that, and nobody can blame game companies for walking that road.
This spawns the argument that “games are played to have fun” or “that game is for babies”. I admire games that are willing to take risk but some events in EvE have changed people lives. What are your opinions on the matter?
I will tell 2 stories that are not in the same “epic” category as the heist but shows at what extend EvE players can go. Eve online offers an Alliance Tournament that provides players the ability to demonstrate their skills under certain conditions. All the teams are on equal ground with each other, the only thing that differenciates the teams are the players. A player went kamikaze and attacked the captain of his own team assessinating him. He was a spy with a mission, perform a public execution. ”Never forget who you insult. Our list is long, our memory is longer, and our patience endless… I am a spy sent to kill Issler in a nice and public way.”
The next story is known as the EIB (Eve Intergalactic Bank I believe) scam, and the mastermind stole around 700billion isk (around $100k). It was so big that a public confesion video was released. While these stories do not create the same intriguing feeling as my previous post, it shows what kind of ruthless game EvE can be, just like real life. There is another great story about a long Alliance Battle (hopefully nobody beats me to it) that I would like to discuss. Maybe I should start writing about nicer events going on in the MMO world …
Day of Darkness 2 – One of the best fan made videos around..
