DDO: Unlimited

One of the most influencial PnP (Pen & Paper for those not realated with the term) franchises in the gaming industry received the MMO treatment a very long time ago and it was called D&D Online: Stormreach.  The game I played at the time didn’t hold my interest for more than a week; it lacked that Neverwinter Nights or Baldur’s Gate feeling and it was completly erased from my memory.   I have to admit the GM voice while running a dungeon was a weird.. but a pleasent surprise.  Stormreach is no more, say hello to DnD: Unlimited.

DnD Unlimited will be dropping the subscription model (no more monthly fee), it will be free to play with a DDO:U Store to buy items and other goodies.  All you can imagine will be for sale, yes even healing pots.  At least Turbine dropped the monthly fee (: cough : Champions Online).  Other changes include: new race, UI, class specific changes, guild improvements among others (click here for patch notes).

So why all of a sudden I decided to write about DnD? Next to my job (yea.. a job, I wish I had a more “stay home job” to help with the soon to arrive baby, oh well), there’s a library and I stumbled across the new DnD 4th Ed book.  Browsing throughout  the pages I remembered the news about DDOU and I felt like trying it again.

Unlimited is scheduled to release on September and I will definetly give it another try; after playing Champions Online I forgot how much I love character custumization.   But that is another rant for another blog.  Using the DDO shop could be a double edged sword as the future of the DDO seems a bit uncertain; turbine has recently sued Atari.

This is completely irrelevant but I want to mention it.  Remember Asherons Call 2? Well it seems Turbine uses a highly modified version of the AC2 engine (I could be wrong) and all 3 games have something peculiar about it, not a problem with me since I think LotR is a beautiful game, along with AoC and Vanguard.
